# How to Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using an Authenticator App

## Learn how to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) to keep your SamaCare account secure.

### **Overview**

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is required for all SamaCare accounts. Once MFA is enabled for your organization, it applies to all users and cannot be turned off for individual accounts. This guide explains how to complete setup in a few simple steps.

### **Before you begin, please note:**

- MFA will be enabled for your entire organization; individual users cannot opt out.
- An exception may apply if your institution previously requested one.
- You will be prompted automatically the next time you log in after MFA is enabled for your practice.

Follow the steps below to complete setup.

### **Step 1: Download an Authenticator App **

Before logging in, download an authenticator app to your phone or other device. You may use any authenticator app you prefer. Common options include:

- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Authy
- 1Password (see Step 4 for 1Password-specific instructions)

| **Tip:** Download the app before your next login so you're ready when the QR code appears. |

### **Step 2: Scan the QR Code**

After MFA has been enabled for your practice, you will see a QR code the next time you log in. Scanning this code connects your SamaCare account to your authenticator app.

1. Open your authenticator app.
2. Select the option to add a new account, usually shown as a **+** button.
3. Use your device’s camera to scan the QR code displayed on your SamaCare login screen.

| **Important:** Only scan the QR code shown during your own login. Each QR code is unique to your account — scanning another user's code will link the wrong account. |

### **Step 3: Enter Your Verification Code**

After you scan the QR code, your authenticator app will generate a 6-digit verification code. Enter this code on the SamaCare login screen to complete setup.

1. Enter the 6-digit code shown in your authenticator app.
2. Click **Verify** or **Continue** to finish setup.

| **Tip:** Codes refresh every 30 seconds. If a code doesn't work, wait for the next one to appear and try again. |

### **Step 4: Using 1Password (Optional)**

If your organization uses 1Password, you can store and access MFA codes directly in the app instead of using a separate authenticator app.

1. Open 1Password and go to your SamaCare login entry.
2. Select the option to add a one-time password.
3. Scan the QR code displayed on your SamaCare login screen.
4. 1Password will generate your MFA codes automatically each time you log in.

| **Tip:** 1Password will autofill your MFA code alongside your username and password, making login faster. |
