[Managing Authorizations](https://help.samacare.com/authorizations?hsLang=en-us#managing-authorizations) August 21, 2026 # How to Update Existing Authorizations ### Editing and Resubmitting an Authorization You can edit and resubmit an authorization if it is in **Pending**, **Voided**, **Sent**, or **Action Required** status. - **Approved** authorizations cannot be edited; this includes editing the dates of service. - **Denied** authorizations cannot be edited, you can only submit an appeal. **Steps:** 1. Click into the authorization from the PA table. 2. Click the purple **Follow Up** button at the top of the authorization. 3. Select **Update PA**. This lets you modify the information on the authorization and resubmit it. The authorization status will automatically change to **Updating PA** until it's submitted again. 4. A confirmation screen will ask if you're sure you want to update the PA. Click **Continue** to proceed to the Patient and Insurance page. Once you've made all the necessary edits, you can resubmit the authorization either: - **Via fax form**, or - **Through the payer portal** Whichever method you choose, be sure to complete all the steps required to fully submit the authorization. Once submitted, the status will return to **Sent** or **Pending**.  **Note:** Fax authorizations also have a **Resend** option, which lets you resubmit the same authorization to the original fax number or to a different one.  ### Renewing an Authorization SamaCare's **Renew** feature becomes available once an authorization is within 30 days of its expiration date, and it will appear directly in the authorization table. The Renew feature is only available for authorizations in **Approved** status, and only for those that have an **End Date** set: - If no End Date was entered on the authorization, the Renew feature will not be available, since the system has no way to know a renewal is due. - The **Renew** button appears starting 30 days before the End Date and remains available for 30 days after the End Date. **If Renew isn't available (e.g., the authorization is in Final status or has no End Date):** Use the **Duplicate** feature instead.
